Rome day 23

A 37 day imaginary travelogue of a trip to Rome (with a few scattered other places such as New York). This is written to match the journey I am actually taking, and so each post is concurrent with the more or less actual day my wife and I are experiencing in Rome.

What day number are we on?: 23

Level of writer's drunkenness (in real life, scale of 1-10): 1

What am I eating (in real life again)?: naught

Map or picture?: Just a random building face (sorry I didn't get more of the door).

Any other notes/Status: no

Today's Entry:

You didn't tune in to my exciting account of a long journey to Rome to hear about my back pain day after day, so I'll try in keep it to 67 percent of the time under the assumption that you did tune in to my exciting account of a long journey to Rome to hear about my back pain, but only two-thirds of the time. Whether that is true or not today we are focusing on other things.

We went to stores today, all afternoon cruising around stores, clothes, junk, art supplies, paper, more clothes, antiques. It was all a perfectly fine way to be in Rome, just milling about the city. It's so full of details here, little carvings in the buildings, glowing stucco, run of the mill ornate doors from 250 years ago that are just, well, doors, but that doesn't mean I can't look at them and feel a small thrill.

I never seriously thought I'd buy anything until I did, a beautiful, faded, very thin, used leather jacket. I am wearing it now. I think it has magical curative properties for my back, not that we're talking about that.

  1. Oh, I'm glad you got a jacket! I do think it will make your back feel better. I bought a beret in Florence. They didn't seem to know the word "beret" so I had to say in Italian, 'the kind of hats the artists wear in France," ha ha! Everyone knew what that was.

    1. Keeping in mind this is the fake, or, er, fictional accounting written before my trip, I did indeed buy two jackets in Rome. The pinstriped velvet one I got for 40 euros is my favorite item of clothes ever and the very best thing I got in Rome- at a resale shop not too far from Piazza Navona. The interior lining is a brilliant silk purple. Holy moly. I wore it to work today.

  2. Just wanted you to know I made a list of the posts I commented on so that I could read your replies. I read them all. They weren't wasted. :) But I still don't quite understand about the fictional account of your real trip...or....? Was there a post where you explained in more in depth? I feel dumb that I don't get it.

  3. Thank you very much for telling me about reading these. I always feel it is more likely this happens when there are comments by a genuine named person, but I never really know. When I make sure to respond to an anonymous comment I have to employ a lot of faith or maybe just the idea that I'm doing it for my own entertainment.

So each post I wrote begins:

"A 37 day imaginary travelogue of a trip to Rome (with a few scattered other places such as New York). This is written to match the journey I am actually taking, and so each post is concurrent with the more or less actual day my wife and I are experiencing in Rome."

If this is not clear please don't feel bad as you were not alone. What I mean is that in the last few weeks before I went to Rome (and NYC) for 35 days I wrote an entirely fictional travelogue ahead of time. Then I scheduled all these posts of this fake travelogue (something a blog can do, like an automatic coffee maker)to publish on the Internet while I was on my actual trip. Thus all these posts about Rome were about what I anticipated might happen, but didn't necessarily.

    I hope that's more clear.

  4. Hi, I was having trouble commenting for a while, but I think I figured it out. But anyway, yes, it does make sense to me now. Thanks for taking the time to explain it!

If you were wondering, yes, you should comment. Not only does it remind me that I must write in intelligible English because someone is actually reading what I write, but it is also a pleasure for me since I am interested in anything you have to say.

I respond to pretty much every comment. It's like a free personalized blog post!

One last detail: If you are commenting on a post more than two weeks old I have to go in and approve it. It's sort of a spam protection device. Also, rarely, a comment will go to spam on its own. Give either of those a day or two and your comment will show up on the blog.
