On Bob Newhart's funny joke

It cannot bode that well to say that today's panel cartoon needs all kinds of explanation.

I was shelving upstairs at my library and came across a book that was something like: "The Thousand Funniest Things Anyone Ever Said". Irresistibly I opened it up and was disappointed to find that the quotes were mainly drawn from second half of the 20th century comedians and celebrities. Most were not particularly funny, and some were a bit too familiar to be funny anymore, even if maybe they once were.

But then I read one by Bob Newhart that, while famous once upon a time, had gotten past me, and I laughed! Right there in the public library I laughed. Well, I chuckled maybe.

I thought it would be fun to make a cartoon of him with this quote. So I wrote it down on a post it note figuring I would eventually put it all together.

After awhile though, it seemed a bit dated, no matter how amusing the quote was, and it was rather short of, well, me! After all, this is my blog, not Bob Newhart's.  So I decided to update the quote.

The original is about country music, and I might as well tell you it, because the new version is more like an inside joke involving people who know and love the original joke.

So you need to know the original joke now.

And to love it.

But it's funny. Don't worry.

Bob Newhart said:

I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down'.

And with all of that, I present our little secret take on one of our favorite jokes by Bob Newhart.

If you were wondering, yes, you should comment. Not only does it remind me that I must write in intelligible English because someone is actually reading what I write, but it is also a pleasure for me since I am interested in anything you have to say.

I respond to pretty much every comment. It's like a free personalized blog post!

One last detail: If you are commenting on a post more than two weeks old I have to go in and approve it. It's sort of a spam protection device. Also, rarely, a comment will go to spam on its own. Give either of those a day or two and your comment will show up on the blog.
